Both the Subaru Outback and Subaru Forester are icons among crossover SUVs in our areas, thanks to their spacious functionality to fit passengers and plenty of cargo, the cutting-edge features integrated into every model, and the ability to take on the worst weather and toughest terrain with ease. While both vehicles share many similarities, they also have their differences. That's why we're going to compare the two models for you, highlighting the differences to help you choose the one that best fits your lifestyle and driving needs around Brooklyn and beyond.

Performance

  • Both the Subaru Outback and Subaru Forester lineups offer a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine that delivers 182-horsepower and 176 pounds-feet of torque, delivering a strong and capable performance, while also being friendly on fuel to help you save on your outings around Jersey City. The Subaru Forester offers only one engine option. The Subaru Outback lineup also offers an available 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder Boxer engine with 260-horsepower and 277 pounds-feet of torque, if you want a sportier experience behind the wheel.
  • Both the Subaru Outback and Subaru Forester lineups come equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive on every model, allowing you to take on bad weather and rugged terrain with confidence and ease. The Outback also comes with a standard X-MODE system that controls engine output, all-wheel drive torque split, braking, and transmission. X-MODE is also available in the Forester lineup.
  • The Subaru Forester offers towing for up to 1,500 pounds. The Subaru Outback offers 2,700 pounds of standard towing, with up to 3,500 pounds of maximum towing when properly equipped, allowing you to easily tote around a trailer, boat, and camper on journeys around Avenel.

Wilderness Editions

  • This year, both lineups gain a new addition. You can now choose the new Subaru Outback Wilderness or Forester Wilderness models, offering off-road enhancements that let you conquer even the toughest terrain and weather around Woodbridge with ease. Both Wilderness models offer skid plates, a unique matte-black hood decal, all-terrain tires and wheels, StarTex® water repellent interior, and more. The only key difference between the Outback Wilderness and Forester Wilderness models, other than the normal differences between the Outback and Forester lineups, is the ground clearance, with the Outback growing to 9.5-inches of clearance and the Forester offering 9.2-inches. Both vehicles previously offered 8.7-inches in normal models.

Size

  • The Subaru Forester and Subaru Outback are similarly sized. The Forester offers more space for passengers with 111.9 cubic feet of passenger volume compared to 105.6 in the Outback, while the Outback has the edge on cargo space with 32.5 cubic feet compared to 28.9 cubic feet in the Forester.

Price

  • The Subaru Outback technically belongs to the wagon segment of vehicles, however it's more often referred to as a midsize SUV. The Subaru Forester is a compact SUV. Because they're in different segments, the Subaru Outback has a slightly higher starting price than the Forester does, with a starting price of just under $27,000 for the Outback and a starting price of just under $25,000 for the Forester.

Technology

  • Both the Subaru Forester and Subaru Outback models offer a Starlink multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility standard. The Forester offers your choice of a standard 6.5-inch or available 8-inch touchscreen display. The Outback offers either a standard 7-inch or available 11.6-inch touchscreen display.
