Spring in Staten Island, NY is a magical time. All the snows of winter have melted away leaving behind the flourish of growth and new life that energizes us after the cold months. Springtime is when you want to load the family into your 2023 Subaru Outback and drive somewhere to enjoy the fresh air and warmer weather. Next time you feel the urge, check out one of these cool spring activities near Staten Island.

1. 7th Ave Sunset Park Greenmarket

This local market is located less than five miles from Staten Island at the corner of 7th Ave. and 44th Street in Brooklyn. This is a Saturday-only farmer’s market that is open from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Aside from fresh local produce, you can also find baked goods and children’s programs. A trip to the market is the perfect way to take advantage of the growing season to stock your kitchen and pantry with high-quality fresh food items.

2. Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden

Springtime is the perfect season to visit a botanical garden, as the magnificent flowers begin to bloom. You can find this dazzling display of colors at 1000 Richmond Terrace on the north shore of Staten Island at the Botanical Garden. Those who appreciate the East will love the Chinese Scholar’s Garden, where you can enjoy the plants and architecture of China. When you are planning your visit, be aware the garden is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

3. South Beach

Going to the beach is a classic warm weather activity, so when the sun comes out in spring, why not head to South Beach? Located in Staten Island’s Arrochar neighborhood, just south of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn, this beach offers ample sand to relax, enjoy the weather, and get an early start on your summer tan.

4. Latourette Park

Lots of people enjoy hiking and wandering the forests, but not so much when there’s snow and ice on the ground. Springtime presents the chance to get back into the woods and experience the delights of the outdoors. Latourette Park, conveniently located in central Staten Island via Rockland Ave. and Forest Hill Road, has plenty of great hiking trails. Springtime is also bird migration time, so there is a lot to see in the trees and bushes this time of year.

These great activities are guaranteed to get you out into the fresh spring air, reinvigorating you after a long New York winter. Whether you are birdwatching at Latourette Park, watching the kids build a sandcastle at South Beach, or smelling the rhododendrons at the gardens, this spring can be amazing.
