For those who were around during the 1990s, the Subaru Outback might be memorable because of the popular ad campaign that featured none other than Paul “Crocodile Dundee” Hogan driving around the Australian bush and extolling the virtues of the world’s “first sport utility wagon.” All these years later, the Outback is still in production. The 2023 Subaru Outback is perfect for the driver who wants the power and capability of an SUV with the agile handling of a sedan.

For those who are subscribers to brand loyalty and Subaru is the brand you enjoy the most, you’re in luck. Many of the same traits that have graced the outback for years are still there, honoring tradition. The most notable is Subaru’s symmetrical AWD, making the Outback primed and ready for both the pavement and the path less traveled of off-roading. There are two engines, both boxers, that are available, and both possess their own unique attributes. The base takes the form of a  2.5L with 182 ponies of horsepower; this can be upgraded to a turbocharged 2.4L which propels the Outback forward with 260 ponies. All trims, with the exception of the Wilderness edition, offer a ground clearance of 8.7 inches, with the aforementioned trim having an elevated clearance of 9.5 and a beefed-up suspension, making it ideal for off-roading. Towing capacities of the Outback differ based on the engine, with the base allowing for 2,700 lbs and the turbocharged having a maximum capacity of 3,500.

Whether you’re content with traveling on the pavement or playing in the dirt, the interior of the 2023 Outback is nothing short of delightful. A sloping windshield maximizes visibility, but we were most impressed by the vertical placement of the infotainment center. Breaking away from expectation, the available screen, which stretches past eleven inches, is a sight to behold, especially when compared to the seven-inch screen that’s standard on the base trims. Apple and Android compatibility is standard, and for those who wish, a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo system with an unbelievable 576 watts of power is available on the upper trim levels.

Much to the delight of many who are concerned with the availability of safety features, Subaru has quite a few that come standard. Among these are adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, and forward collision warning. Rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitoring are optional and recommended for maximum peace of mind.
