One of the most remarkable developments to occur within the automotive industry has been the mass production of EVs. Manufacturers are making great strides in doing their part to be more ecologically conscious and reduce the carbon footprint left by the internal combustion engine. Subaru has joined the fold for the 2023 model year with the release of the Solterra—the first all-electric EV to come from the brand; it’s time to get acquainted with the new challenger.

The Solterra comes out swinging with some impressive specifications regarding its powertrain and performance. Like so many other of its Subaru siblings, the Solterra makes use of a symmetrical AWD drivetrain. This is propelled by two electric motors that generate 215 horsepower and an equally impressive 249 lb-ft of torque. The power delivered to the wheels can be done in a multitude of ways courtesy of four distinctive drive modes. An advantage that the Solterra has over EVs in its class is that it’s not just off-road capable but off-road ready. The Solterra benefits from over eight inches of ground clearance and a low-speed cruise control feature that Subaru has labeled “grip control.” Testing has not been conducted at the time of this article, but it’s estimated that Subaru’s debut EV will travel anywhere between 222 and 228 miles on a full charge.

Much to our delight, the interior of the all-new Solterra looks like it was ripped right from the pages of a science-fiction novel. Its steering column protrudes outward to mimic that of a starfighter. Atop the dash sits a digital instrument cluster matching the driver’s line of sight almost perfectly. The strategic placement elevates the interior aesthetic to a place no other vehicle has managed to get to. The infotainment screen, which stretches out past twelve inches, anchors the interior and comes standard with Apple and Android compatibility. The vehicle’s HVAC system is controlled via an app, which illustrates Subaru’s attention to detail.

The driving and safety assistance features are standard on the Subaru Solterra. These will include a first for the brand, a 360-degree camera system for increased visibility, and automatic high beams. Automated emergency braking, advanced collision warning, lane departure & keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert all come standard, much to the delight of drivers who crave maximum peace of mind.
