The borough of Staten Island, NY, is located just south a few miles southwest of Manhattan and offers plenty of tourist attractions worth checking out. Although this part of the city is often shadowed by world-famous sites such as Central Park, Times Square, or Broadway, exploring Staten Island is an excellent way to discover another face of New York. Here are three fantastic local spots you should visit while in the area.

1. Staten Island Museum

Located at 1000 Richmond Terrace and established in the late 19th century, Staten Island Museum is the oldest cultural institution in the borough and an excellent place to learn about its history and traditions. Divided into three main permanent exhibits dedicated to natural sciences, fine art, and history, this museum is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Drawing visitors from all over New York City and beyond, Staten Island Museum is one of the most important hubs for culture and education in the area. Some of the artifacts you can find here include a large set of botanical and anthropological specimens, historical collections of maps and books, and art pieces from all around the world.

2. Great Kills Park

If you are searching for a place to spend some time outdoors and enjoy a sunny day having a picnic with your friends or family, Great Kills Park is the place to be. Located at 3270 Hylan Boulevard on the eastern coast of the island and right by the shores of Raritan Bay, this park is a well-known weekend destination among locals and an increasingly popular tourist attraction.

Managed by the National Park Service and established in 1949, Great Kills Park is open to the public every day of the year between 6:00 am and 1:00 am. Some of the amenities you can find here include a public swimming beach, several miles of hiking and biking trails, an osprey nesting site, and plenty of picnic spots.

3. National Lighthouse Museum

The National Lighthouse Museum is a small and little-known tourist attraction located in the northeastern corner of Staten Island. Open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, this complex is dedicated to the history of lighthouses and their keepers. Established in 2015, this place features numerous permanent exhibits that showcase more than 180 lighthouse models and allow visitors to learn more about the importance of these structures.
